The door locked behind you
The classic — stepped out for the mail or the trash, the knob was set to lock, and the keys are on the kitchen counter. Usually the quickest job I do.
You lost the keys
I get you in, and then we talk about whether to rekey while I'm there. If the keys went missing with anything showing your address, the answer is yes.
The key broke off in the lock
I extract the broken piece without damaging the cylinder, then cut you a new key from the remaining half or to code.
The lock is jammed or the key won't turn
Worn pins, a misaligned deadbolt, a cylinder that's seized. I'll get the door open first, then tell you whether it's a repair or a replacement.
Apartments, garages and interior doors
Apartment doors, a garage side door, a bedroom that locked with someone's medication inside, a home office. Same approach, same care.

2. I check it's your home
Photo ID with the address, or a lease, a bill, a neighbor who knows you. If everything's inside, we sort it once the door's open.
3. Open, tested, done
The lock is picked or bypassed, the door is open, and your key still works. If you want it rekeyed while I'm there, that's usually a few minutes more.

Why I ask for ID every single time
I will not open a home for someone who can't show me they're entitled to be inside. It's a rule I don't bend, and I'd ask you to be suspicious of any locksmith who does — because the same lock that's keeping you out tonight is the one keeping everyone else out every other night.
- Photo ID with the address on it, or
- ID plus something with the address — a lease, a utility bill, a piece of mail, or
- A landlord or property manager confirming by phone, or
- Once inside — if everything's on the other side of the door, show me when we're in
If someone's in danger — a child or elderly relative locked in, a medical situation — call 911 first, then me.

What people ask
My ID is inside the house. Can you still let me in?
Usually. Tell me on the phone. Once the door's open you can show me ID or mail with the address on it; a neighbor or landlord who can vouch for you also helps.
Will you damage the door?
No. I pick or bypass the lock and leave it working for your key. Drilling is a last resort for a lock that genuinely can't be opened any other way, and I'll explain that before I start.
Should I rekey after a lockout?
If you were locked out because the keys are lost, yes — and it's cheapest to do it while I'm already there. If the keys are sitting on the counter, no; you just need the door open.
Do you charge more at night?
You'll hear the price on the phone before I set out, whatever the hour. No surprise fee when I arrive.
